Exploring Careers Through Real-World Learning

We have experienced so many changes in the world of education and the world of work. Technology is constantly evolving, and skills in demand now may not be needed five years from now. Jobs are changing, technology is advancing rapidly, and careers that exist today may not exist in the future. We also have to remember that many jobs don’t exist yet that will need to be filled by the students in our classrooms today. How do we prepare for what we can’t truly know and understand? 

Students must have opportunities to explore a variety of topics and careers. They need experiences that will guide them to learn about their areas of interest and themselves. We need to spark curiosity about learning and help students discover what they might actually be interested in. 

Students must be active in learning and have time to explore the world around them. In some classrooms, students may experience passive learning and solely consume content rather than create it. To really enhance and transform learning for our students, we must create experiences that may even cause some good chaos. It might push us to shift from what has been a traditional classroom structure of our teaching practice. What I have learned by stepping out of my comfort zone and taking some risks is that learning can and should happen beyond our classroom space. We must embrace new learning models that promote student agency and spark student curiosity for learning. Using methods and creating opportunities that foster the development of essential SEL skills, we will best prepare students for the future through real-world learning opportunities. When they see the relevance of what they are learning and how that applies to the real world and careers that are available to them, it will boost interest and excitement for learning.

How do we prepare?

We have to consider which methods and tools will best meet the needs and interests of our students. In education, we have been focusing on developing “21st-century skills” for many years. We can’t possibly know everything about what the future holds for students when it comes to careers and specific skills, so to prepare, we must help students build a variety of skills, especially skills that are beneficial to many areas of work. Opportunities that support students as they learn how to adapt to changes and become flexible in learning and growing will prepare them for whatever the world of work will look like five, ten, or more years from now. I also recommend following the Job Skills Outlook Report shared by the World Economic Forum to look at the Top Ten Skills in Demand and gain insights into careers that are on the rise. In my STEAM class, we recently did some career research on areas such as Cybersecurity Experts, Ethical Hackers, Data Analysts, Smart City Developers and more.

Here are three more ways to spark curiosity for the future and engage students in career-focused learning:  

  1. CTE and Work-based learning: Students need to continue to learn about the career options that are available and how they may be changing. With CTE, work-based learning, and even job shadowing programs, students gain practical and real-world insights into different fields. Being able to experience what it is like in the work environment and interact with people working in careers of interest to students will have a bigger and more meaningful impact. By partnering with local businesses and professionals, inviting guest speakers, and involving students in real-world, hands-on projects, they will become more aware of the opportunities available. Through these experiences, they learn about what their interests are and how they can make an impact in the world.
  2. Place-based learning: By shifting our focus from solely the content area, we can identify a geographical area or the culture of a place as a way to build content knowledge and help students develop SEL skills. Through place-based learning, we place students into the community to collaborate with local businesses, entrepreneurs, and other organizations. These experiences allow students to apply the content they are learning in the real world and see the impact. These experiences foster the development of student agency, boost engagement and excitement for learning, and enhance student awareness of the issues in the world around them. To further engage students, we can arrange field trips to local industries, invite guest speakers to our schools, and have students research local challenges and offer solutions.
  3. Project-based learning (PBL): With PBL, students take the lead in deciding what they want to learn and how they want to learn it. With PBL, students choose an area of interest, design their own learning journey, and, throughout the experience, will see the “process” of learning rather than a finite endpoint. In our classroom, we explored a variety of student-chosen topics and also incorporated the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the projects. We can help students to become more globally aware and involved in finding solutions to challenges faced in the world. PBL helps students to become more independent in learning while developing essential SEL skills such as self-management and social awareness.

There are many more options available, but starting with just a few is the way to go. Think about your local community or reach to your global network. There are organizations available that help educators to provide these types of opportunities. While we may not know exactly which jobs will still exist, we do know that there are specific skills that will help students stay flexible and adapt to the changing landscape of learning and work. In real-world opportunities, students will make connections that will positively impact their learning and, hopefully, spark curiosity and excitement for learning!

College and Career Readiness for Middle School Students

Regardless of our role in education or the grade levels that we work with, we all have a responsibility to bring in a variety of learning opportunities to prepare our students for successful careers. They need to engage in learning that will equip them with essential skills and the right knowledge so they can thrive after they leave our classrooms and our schools. Helping students to learn about potential future careers or options for continuing their education should not be limited to the high school years. By starting to focus on career and college readiness at the middle school level, we can help students learn about the many options available to them and spark their curiosity for learning.

There are many ways to get started, and there are a lot of benefits to creating college and career readiness opportunities for middle school students. Finding methods and tools or comprehensive resources will have a positive impact on student academic success, increase engagement in learning, and foster the development of essential future skills. Educators can offer an innovative and engaging approach to introduce students to various professions, ignite their passion, and empower them to shape their future.

In this post, I will share the benefits of focusing on career exploration with middle school and even younger students.

Early Exposure to Career Options

Introducing college and career readiness in middle school helps to inform students about a wide range of career options. Through career exploration activities and resources, students can explore job roles in various industries and professions. Defined Learning, offers comprehensive career exploration tools that provide K through 12 students with insights into different careers. With the K-5 program, this early exposure helps students gain a clearer understanding of their interests, passions, and the skills required for 16 different career clusters. For middle and high school students, interactive modules and videos give students the chance to explore diverse career options, such as engineering, entrepreneurship, healthcare, or even art. By learning more about a variety of careers, we can help students to discover their interests and passions, allowing them to make informed decisions about their educational and career paths.

Defined Learning Careers offers resources to help students develop these skills through career courses. Each Career Course focuses on providing students with relevant career experiences and skills needed for a specific career. Once students explore a career, schools can then invite guest speakers from various professions to share their experiences and insights can inspire students to explore different career options and set meaningful goals. By incorporating technology and interactive learning, students can access these materials at any time and experience a dynamic and engaging learning environment. Students learn about careers they may not have ever heard of and it might just be something that really piques their interest!

Hands-On Learning:

There are a lot of opportunities available in STEM-related careers. When it comes to STEM, we have many ways to implement STEM activities, even through PBL. By exploring the careers that are highlighted through Defined Careers, students become aware of the different fields that require STEM-related skills. By connecting this learning with hands-on activities that simulate real-world scenarios, we can spark curiosity and help students to think about where their interests may lie. For example, with grades K through 5, students can learn about a specific career and then engage in PBL experiences that mimic tasks typically performed by professionals in different fields. These experiences provide a glimpse into various careers’ daily responsibilities and challenges, helping students develop a deeper understanding of their interests and potential career paths.

Mentorship and Networking Opportunities

It is important for students to learn about different types of work and what might be expected of them in a potential career of interest. With the options available through place-based learning or project-based learning (PBL), students can connect with professionals in related fields. With the Defined Careers, students can explore careers of interest and then work with teachers and the community to find a mentorship program or seek opportunities to connect with and learn from professionals in different industries. In my experience, we have taken students on field trips to job sites to see firsthand the type of work that is done in a factory or a corporation, for example.

Building these connections early, primarily through opportunities at the middle-school level, helps students gain valuable insights, learn the importance of expanding their learning network, and offers them a connection to receive valuable advice for their future endeavors. Educators can also offer their own guidance by providing one-on-one meetings with students to discuss their career goals and help them create a plan for achieving those goals. Another excellent option is bringing in community members to talk to students as part of a career day. When students explore some of the careers in the Defined Careers resources, we can find local community members to create a real-world learning experience for them.

Online career learning programs offer a transformative educational experience that prepares all students for the challenges and opportunities of the future. By exploring diverse professions, engaging in hands-on activities, connecting with mentors, developing future skills, and through the flexibility of personalized learning, students become excited and motivated about their future careers.

Building a knowledge base early on will help students to think about their interests, reflect on their growth and set goals. We want students to see learning as a process and to be aware of the many opportunities that exist for them in the future.

3 Ways to Get Students Excited About Creating Their Own Career Paths

In today’s ever-changing job market, we need to help students develop a variety of skills that will enable them to be flexible with the changes we are seeing in the world of work. It is also important that students have opportunities to consider a variety of career paths. It’s not enough to just focus on the careers and options that exist today, as technology and the jobs in demand are constantly evolving.

To help students take ownership of their career journey and be curious about the opportunities available, educators can explore the resources provided by Defined Careers to help students learn about their options. Defined Careers is an online platform that offers a variety of tools and resources to help K through 12 students explore and experience career options and develop the skills needed to succeed in the future, whether in college or career. There are materials available for students in elementary, middle and high school and each has a listing of possible career choices.

Here are a few ideas for how educators can use Defined Careers to get their students excited about creating their own career paths:

1. Encourage Career Exploration

One of the best ways to get students excited about creating their own career paths is to encourage them to explore their interests and passions. Ask students about their interests and provide opportunities for students to exchange ideas with classmates. Sparking interest in career exploration happens when students have a chance to dive into their own curiosity and tap into their personal interests. When students are passionate about something, they are more likely to be motivated and engaged in their work. Sharing resources will provide students with access to a wide range of real-world career scenarios that can help them identify their interests and passions. These resources may inspire students to think about the types of careers that would enable them to pursue their passions while also making a difference in the world. Defined Careers offers a wealth of information for all grade levels and different areas of work. It includes job descriptions, education requirements, and salary information.

To make this learning experience more engaging and build communication skills and classroom collaboration, educators can also have students create brief presentations or share what they learned about different careers. This can help students get excited about the possibilities and start to envision their own career paths.

2. Foster Career Readiness Skills

In addition to exploring different careers, students also need to develop the skills necessary to succeed in the workforce. Defined Careers offers resources to help students develop these skills through career courses. Each Career Course focuses on providing students with relevant career experiences and skills needed for a specific career. Each career course is a collection of projects that gives students hands-on learning opportunities.  Teachers can supplement these materials by having students create materials they need for careers of interest such as resumes and cover letters, or preparing for an interview. Through the career clusters, students also create products of their learning that can be uploaded into their portfolio to track their growth. Students can explore to learn about the demand for specific careers.

Educators can incorporate these resources into their curriculum, either as standalone lessons or as part of larger projects. By helping students develop these skills, educators can empower them to take ownership of their career paths and feel confident in their ability to succeed.

3. Incorporate Real-World Experiences

One of the best ways to get students excited about their future careers is to give them real-world experiences. Defined Careers’ Courses offers a variety of units and career clusters that have projects and project descriptions to give students real-world learning experiences.  To bring it to life even more,  educators can help students to find opportunities to engage in virtual job shadowing or connect within the community to learn about industry-specific projects.

By incorporating these types of experiences into their curriculum, educators can help students see how their education is directly relevant to their future careers. This can be especially valuable for students who may not have a clear idea of what they want to do after graduation. Having a variety of options to explore within one platform is so helpful for educators looking to provide more choices for students and for students to have guided support as they learn about careers through the pathways. Exploring the work of commercial and industrial designers, a baker, a hazmat technician and other careers will spark some curiosity.

4. Encourage Students to Think Outside the Box

In order to create their own career paths, students need to be able to think outside the box. Defined Careers resources can be used to help students think creatively about their future careers. Especially for students that may be unsure about future plans, exploring these real-world tasks can be so beneficial.

For example, students can explore non-traditional career paths, such as interior designer, an artist, or a game designer, and learn about the skills and resources they will need to succeed in these types of careers. By encouraging students to think outside the box, educators can help them see the possibilities for their future careers and feel excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. Educators can also offer their own guidance by providing one-on-one meetings with students to discuss their career goals and help them create a plan for achieving those goals. By offering this kind of support, educators can help students feel more confident in their ability to navigate the constantly changing job market.

Getting students excited about creating their own career paths is essential to best prepare them for the future. Defined Careers offers a variety of resources to help educators foster career exploration, develop career readiness skills, and incorporate real-world experiences through a range of project-based learning experiences that help students develop the skills they will need to succeed. How students access core SEL competencies at school

What is Social Emotional Learning

Social emotional learning (SEL) is the process in which people develop interrelational skills that include self-awareness, social and relationship skills, responsibility, empathy, and more. Social-emotional learning has become an important piece of high school education, as educators see improved student outcomes because of an emphasis on SEL. More and more schools and districts are adopting SEL programs or tracking social-emotional development during a student’s high school career in order to prepare a student for future success whether that is in a university or the workforce. 

What Constitutes SEL

According to CASEL’S SEL framework, there are 5 elements that constitute social-emotional learning. 

  1. Self-awareness
  2. Self-management
  3. Social awareness
  4. Relationship skills
  5. Responsible decision-making.

Why is this important?

Social-emotional development is a vital part of a student’s upbringing. This kind of development impacts how a student shows up in the world, how they interact with their peers, how they approach school and jobs, and how they develop meaningful relationships. Social-emotional development is crucial in positive student outcomes because they are learning valuable life skills and concepts. Additionally, universities seek students who possess a broadened perspective on the world and developed self-awareness. 

How do students develop social-emotional learning? 

There are a number of ways students grow in these areas and they don’t come from just one thing! Many of these competencies are developed through school-related activities and programs. Five days out of the week and 7-8 hours a day, students are in school. They spend additional time with their classmates in after-school programs, sports, extracurriculars, etc. Tracking and encouraging social-emotional learning has become a priority for educators as they know so much of this comes from school or school-related activities. 

There are three overarching ways students engage in social-emotional development through school:

  1. Community service requirements, programs or clubs. 

When they become active members of their communities through service, students are able to see outside of their small world bubble, and understand needs and different ways of life. Through service projects, students work with their peers, local or even national organizations, service activity coordinators, and individuals they are directly serving. This exposes them to needs and circumstances outside their normal bubble widening their world view. They are also learning valuable skills such as teamwork, communication, collaboration, and respect. 

Many schools have a service requirement for graduation. Others highly encourage student involvement in the community and award it at graduation, while others have clubs and programs where students can engage in community service. 

  1. Work-based learning and internship programs 

In part-time jobs, apprenticeships, internships, etc. students learn valuable workplace skills but they also learn the soft skills of problem-solving, relationship-building, empathy, understanding, cooperation, and collaboration. These school-based programs connect students with a job or internship and then have regular check-ins and assessments to evaluate a student’s development. It goes beyond a student just showing up for a shift, they are learning valuable skills they can take into the workforce in the future. 

  1. Service learning classes, humanities, or religion classes

Some schools have dedicated service learning classes or incorporate service and service learning in a humanities course. Private schools often incorporate service and service learning in their religion classes as it ties back to their faith and the mission of the school to encourage spiritual formation in students. 

Service learning connects service to what students are learning in the classroom – this gives students context for their work and provides deeper connections beyond checking service hours off a list. They can see and understand the impact of their work and reflect on their experiences in a meaningful way. 

Measuring and encouraging development

These school-based programs ensure students are given the opportunity to experience growth on a deeper level. Success and development come when educators can see a student’s progress month after month, year after year. Tracking their experiences, reflections, and areas of growth is an important step in advancing social-emotional learning.
