Preparing students for the future

We live in a rapidly evolving world shaped by artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies, and we are preparing students for an uncertain future. These changes require educators to continue learning and exploring, to prepare students. We now have to focus on career-connected learning. This learning will help bridge the gap between education and the workforce, enabling students to develop adaptability, purpose, and the real-world skills necessary to thrive in jobs that may not yet exist.

Technology has been advancing at a rate faster than we could have imagined. From AI and automation to data analytics and immersive learning and working environments, the world of work is undergoing a significant transformation. As educators, we can no longer predict with certainty what future jobs will look like, but we can work to equip students with the flexibility and curiosity to succeed in any setting.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) provides valuable information and insights into in-demand skills. I refer to their Top 10 skills often as I work to prepare my students for the future. The WEF continues to emphasize the importance of transferable, human-centered skills. Its list of in-demand competencies, which include analytical thinking, creativity, resilience, and technological literacy, highlights how the focus has shifted from content memorization to capability building. To prepare our students, the best we can do is to always focus on connecting their learning to real-world experiences which will help them to experience authentic learning and develop skills in adaptability and many other essential skills.

What Does “Career Ready” actually mean today?

Traditionally, being “career ready” has referred to having strong academics and a set of soft skills such as collaboration and communication. While these are still essential skills, we have to also focus on skills in digital literacy, ethical reasoning, and the ability to navigate technologies increasingly powered by AI.

To truly prepare students, we must also help them use AI as a collaborative tool that enhances and does not replace their opportunities for learning. By leveraging platforms such as ChatGPT to brainstorm ideas, analyze information, and refine their thinking or using platforms such as Brisk Teaching, Kira Learning, Learning Genie, Magic School, School AI, and others, we can create opportunities for them or place AI in their hands. As more careers begin to require AI proficiency, classroom experiences that integrate generative tools responsibly will ensure students are well-prepared for the digital demands of the workplace.

Designing Spaces for Exploration and Purpose

Career-connected learning transforms classrooms into environments of exploration. Students need opportunities to dream big, test their ideas, fail, and iterate, and apply their skills in authentic contexts. Through hands-on projects and simulations that reflect real-world scenarios, we will foster curiosity while demonstrating the relevance of what students learn.

When we build intentional career connections into learning, we empower students to see themselves as the creators and innovators. By bringing in design thinking projects, project-based learning (PBL), place-based learning, community partnerships, or global collaboration, relevance and purpose become the driving forces behind engagement.

Elements of Career-Connected Learning

  • Project-Based Learning (PBL): Develop projects that address community or industry needs.
  • Emerging Tech Integration: Introduce students to AI, coding, and data science.
  • Authentic, Real-World Tasks: Use simulations or case studies that are based on real-world issues.
  • Partnerships: Collaborate with local businesses, universities, or nonprofits to provide mentorship or feedback.
  • Skill Challenges: Incorporate AI, cybersecurity, or innovation competitions that mirror workforce skills.

An important focus of all of this is promoting student agency. When students see that their work connects to real-world possibilities, it boosts motivation and engagement in learning and promotes long-term retention.

The WEF’s Future of Jobs Report predicts that by 2027, 85 million jobs will be displaced by automation and AI—but 97 million new roles will emerge. These new opportunities will require high-level cognitive ability, digital agility, and ethical decision-making.

Roles like AI ethics consultant, digital twin designer, and data privacy advocate are already appearing—and most students haven’t even heard of them. Meanwhile, more than half of all workers will need reskilling within a few years. This shift highlights a crucial point: education must evolve to keep pace with innovation.

Strategies for Building Career-Connected Classrooms

  1. Create Interdisciplinary Learning Experiences
    Combine subjects to reflect real-world problem-solving. For instance, collaborate math and art for data visualization projects, or integrate English and computer science to explore ethical storytelling with AI.
  2. Leverage AI Tools to Design Career-Ready Tasks
    Platforms like Eduaide, Kira Learning, Knowt, MagicSchool AI, and Brisk Teaching can help educators design simulations or career-based challenges aligned with workforce trends without adding to planning time. Lack of time and resources are the top two reasons that bringing AI experiences into classrooms can be a challenge.
  3. Partner with Industry and Community Organizations
    Collaborate with businesses, universities, and nonprofits to provide mentorship, guest speakers, job shadowing, and feedback on student projects. Even virtual connections can make a lasting impact. Not only do students benefit, but the greater school community learns from these experiences and it further solidifies the home to school connection and the sense of a supportive school community.
  4. Empower Students to Lead
    Provide students with an opportunity to create and lead tech support programs, host digital wellness campaigns, or work with their teachers on technology developments.

Keeping the focus on human skills

Career-connected learning isn’t just about building skills. It is about skills, and it’s also about building identity and purpose. It helps students answer three essential questions:
Who am I? Where am I going? How can I make a difference?

As automation and AI reshape every industry, schools must prioritize technological fluency and human skills such as compassion, creativity, and ethical reasoning. Keeping humanity involved is essential, as this is what distinguishes us from machines and the technologies available.

Educators play a crucial role in striking a balance between innovation and humanity. By providing students with authentic opportunities to explore careers, solve problems, and apply their learning, we’re helping them become not just workers of tomorrow, but leaders, innovators, and changemakers.

Imagi Webinar: AI-Ready Educators: Preparing Teachers for the Future of Learning

Artificial Intelligence is no longer a concept for the future—it’s transforming classrooms everywhere. The sudden and widespread availability of powerful AI tools has left many educators with a mix of excitement and apprehension. How can we, as educators, prepare our students for an AI-driven future? How do we harness the potential of these tools while carefully and consistently navigating their pitfalls?

These were the central questions addressed in a recent webinar, “The AI-Ready Educator: Preparing Teachers for the Future of Learning,” hosted by ThriveinEDU and Imagi-Labs. The session brought together a panel of experts, including educator, author, and attorney, Dr. Rachelle Dené Poth, who moderated a powerful conversation with panelists Alana Winnick, Beatrice Ionascu, and Ken Shelton about the intersection of computer science, computational thinking, AI, and ethics in modern education.

“We’re not here because we’re experts—we’re here because we’re learners,” said Poth, who has spent the past eight years working with AI in education. “This is a conversation. We’re figuring it out together.” This insightful conversation provided a roadmap for educators looking to become AI-ready.

Understanding the Fundamentals

Before exploring the practical applications of AI in the classroom, it’s essential to understand what AI is. As Beatrice explained, AI systems are designed to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as pattern recognition, language processing, and decision-making, all of which are fueled by data. Ken Shelton further clarified that ‘not all AI is the same,” breaking it down into three types: reactive, predictive, and generative. While we’ve been interacting with reactive AI (like spell check and email spam filters) and predictive AI for years, it’s the recent explosion of generative AI that has captured our collective attention.

Understanding these distinctions is the first step toward developing a nuanced approach to AI in education. A blanket policy to “block all AI,” as Ken pointed out, is not only impractical but also counterproductive, as it would mean eliminating tools we rely on daily. Instead, the focus should be on using these systems effectively and responsibly.

From Educators to Empowerers

The panel opened with introductions from four leaders who are not only immersed in educational innovation but also actively working to shape its future.

Alana Winnick, Educational Technology Director and Data Protection Officer at Pocantico Hills Central School District in New York, emphasized the need for purpose-driven integration of AI. “I also started a program called Students for Innovation, which empowers students to advocate for change in their schools,” she shared. With a book and podcast on generative AI, Winnick has centered her work on amplifying student voices in tech spaces.

Beatrice Ionascu, co-founder and CTO of Imagi, echoed the importance of inspiring student curiosity. “I truly believe that technology education is the key to creating a better world,” she said. “At Imagi, our mission is to make computer science and AI literacy as essential and accessible as reading and math.” With a background in engineering, product design, and education, she brings a unique perspective to building tools that connect students, especially girls, to technology through creative coding.

The Imperative of AI Literacy

A recurring theme throughout the discussion was the concept of “AI literacy.” Ken Shelton offered a comprehensive definition: “AI literacy means knowing, understanding, and using AI in smart and safe ways. It helps people ask good questions about how AI works, how it helps or hurts others, and how it can change or impact the world around us.”

Alana Winnick provided a practical framework for fostering AI literacy in students, assigning them two critical roles: the “detective” and the “DJ”. As detectives, students must be on the lookout for bias and misinformation, understanding that AI is not a magical, infallible source of truth. This is a crucial skill, especially in a world where AI-generated content can be convincingly inaccurate. As DJs, students are encouraged to “remix” AI-generated content, infusing it with their own thoughts, ideas, and voice, ensuring that their work remains a reflection of their own learning and creativity.

The Irreplaceable Human Element

One of the most pressing concerns for educators is the fear that AI will render their roles obsolete. The panelists, however, were unanimous in their belief that the human element in teaching is not only irreplaceable but will become even more critical in an AI-integrated world. Beatrice painted a stark picture of a “dystopic future” where learners are isolated with machines, a vision that underscores the fundamental need for human connection in education.

Ken Shelton passionately argued that AI cannot and should not replace the meaningful interactions that are the bedrock of effective teaching and learning. He cautioned against “cognitively offloading” the human aspects of education to AI, emphasizing that these systems don’t know our students’ individual needs, dreams, and challenges. Alana added that AI, when used thoughtfully, can actually enhance the human element by automating tedious tasks, freeing up teachers to focus on what they do best: building relationships, fostering a positive classroom culture, and providing individualized support. Poth agreed that when using AI in her classroom, she guides students on how to use it for enhancing learning and engages in more conversations and interactions with students because of the time that can be saved when using these tools.

The Role of Computational Thinking

While discussing AI and various important topics, we also emphasized the importance of computational thinking (CT) as a foundational skill for AI readiness. CT includes logic, pattern recognition, decomposition, and abstraction—core elements that help students understand how computers “think” before they ever write a line of code.

Panelists agreed that you can’t fully understand AI without understanding the process of problem-solving that goes into it. Computational thinking is the gateway to coding and beyond.

Winnick added, “We’re seeing kids jump straight to AI tools, but they still need to understand how algorithms are structured, how data works, and how to identify problems worth solving. AI doesn’t replace thinking—it amplifies it when used responsibly.”

AI as a Tool for Creation—not Just Consumption

One key takeaway was that AI should be positioned as a tool that supports students as creators, not just consumers. This shift requires educators to rethink traditional computer science instruction.

“We want students to code, but also to see how AI can help them prototype faster, solve problems differently, or iterate creatively,” Ionascu explained. “That’s why we need to teach both the fundamentals and how to critically use AI tools.”

The panel discussed how students can use AI to generate code, explore new ideas, or debug faster—but only if they’ve first learned the structure and logic of programming.

Ethics Must Be Front and Center

Beyond skills and tools, panelists emphasized that students need to learn how to use AI responsibly, and this starts with intentional discussions about ethics.

“We can’t wait until something goes wrong to start talking about ethics,” said Winnick. “Students need to understand bias, privacy, and the societal impact of AI from the beginning.”

Ionascu added, “In our work at Imagi, we try to normalize conversations about ethics early on. It’s not a separate unit—it’s woven into every experience with technology. Students should be asking, ‘What could go wrong?’ Who is this helping? Who might it harm?”

Shelton also highlighted the role of educators in modeling ethical inquiry. “We don’t need to have all the answers, but we do need to show students how to ask the right questions.” Shelton’s work related to equity is well-known,  and his book “The Promises and Perils of AI in Education: Ethics and Equity Have Entered The Chat,” which he co-authored with Dee Lanier, is a great resource for educators.

Practical Strategies for Educators

The webinar also offered classroom-ready strategies to help educators bridge the gap between foundational computer science and AI-enhanced learning:

  1. Use block-based coding (like Scratch or Imagi) to introduce logic before jumping into text-based languages.
  2. Incorporate AI exploration tools (such as ChatGPT or Google’s Teachable Machine) to show how models are trained.
  3. Encourage journaling or reflection prompts about ethical dilemmas related to AI tools.
  4. Introduce AI early, but always in tandem with skill-building and reflection.

Poth emphasized, “It’s not about having a perfect curriculum. It’s about giving students opportunities to explore, experiment, and reflect.”

Preparing Educators to Prepare Students

At its core, the panel’s message was clear: educators themselves must become AI-literate if they’re going to prepare students for an AI-driven world.

“We have to do the work of learning ourselves,” said Winnick. “That means experimenting with tools, joining communities, reading critically, and being honest with students when we don’t know something yet.”

Ionascu reinforced this, noting that teacher curiosity is contagious. “When students see educators exploring and asking thoughtful questions, it empowers them to do the same.”

As the conversation closed, panelists left attendees with words of encouragement: It is an opportunity to rethink what we teach, how we teach it, and how we prepare students to lead in the future.

The message of the evening was one of hope, responsibility, and action. As AI continues to evolve, so too must our approach to teaching. By grounding our work in computational thinking, ethical reasoning, and curiosity, we can help students not only adapt to the future but shape it. Data Science for Everyone

As the world continues to change, educators need to stay up to date with all of the emerging technologies to best understand the essential skills that students need for whatever lies ahead in the future. To do so, we have to find the most beneficial resources to bring into the classroom regardless of the content area or grade level being taught.

With the rise in the use of artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, blockchain, NFTS, the metaverse, and web3, the world of work will look very different. Students need to develop a variety of skills, especially in STEM-related fields and in areas such as computational thinking or data science. Students need to be data literate and have opportunities to develop their skills in all grade levels.

What does being data literate mean?

Let’s first look at the difference between data science and data literacy. When we take the information that we get from data and interpret it, look for patterns, this is data science. Educators inform instruction based on assessments given in classrooms. The data we receive from students helps us understand where they are in their learning journey and helps us to plan our next steps. Data science skills are an essential component of life and work.

​While we hope that students will become more interested in data science because of the increase in jobs available, the focus needs to be on providing each student with an opportunity to learn. It has been predicted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics that the number of statistician jobs will increase by almost 34% from 2016 to 2026.

Being data literate means that you understand what the data represents, know how to process it, and use it to inform your next steps and make decisions. ​While it is a technical skill, it is how we analyze, visualize, interpret, and even communicate what we are taking away from the data.

How do we prepare?

More schools are starting to offer courses in data science to students in grades K through 12. Some are providing a full-year course or an individual lesson or unit of study for courses. Colleges have data science degrees and some majors require students to demonstrate competency in data science before taking certain courses.

In some schools, data science becomes part of the math curriculum or is offered as an elective. There are schools that may require it for graduation. There are 65 schools in the United States, in which the first full-year course called Introduction to Data Science is now being taught. These offerings are highly beneficial but may not be an option due to budgeting or lack of staff. A solution is for teachers to incorporate data literacy into different lessons or as a standalone learning experience during the year. Whether students are in elementary, middle or high school, there are resources available.

Data Science 4 Everyone

Fortunately, educators have access to a variety of resources to make it easier and less time consuming to bring data science to the classroom. Learn about the Data Science 4 Everyone (DS4E) Coalition that has been created to help students in grades K through 12 build the necessary skills in data literacy. The Data Science 4 Everyone was created by the University of Chicago Center for Radical Innovation for Social Change (RISC). In addition to the resources provided by DS4E, the RISC launched Algo-Rhythmas a gamified way for students to learn about data science. Students in grades 4 through 6 can learn about the basics of data science through music! There are multiple levels and the player has to analyze the different music types to find the right data set. It is fun for educators too!

Knowledge and skills in data science will lead to more opportunities in education and careers in the future. DS4E provides teachers with lessons for use with students in grades K through 12

Thinking about colleges, having all students take a course in data science would be something that could benefit them across all sectors of work and in terms of education, with pre-service teachers, helping them to become more diligent with benefit them in the work that they do.

In addition to DS4E, here are more options to explore for learning about data science.

  • ASU Crash Course Data Literacy offers a 15-video series for educators and students to learn about data literacy. It helps students to build their skills while promoting more student independence in learning as they work through and learn the basics and continue all the way to advanced concepts and interpreting data.
  • Khan Academy offers online courses that include practice activities and videos. These can be used with younger students all the way up through high school and college. Relevant activities can be found by searching for a specific topic area related to data science and the interpretation of data.
  • MOOCS: There are paid options through some of the MOOCs available such as Coursera, EdX. Udacity, and Udemy. Some of these courses are provided from institutions such as Harvard, Johns Hopkins and MIT. Depending on exactly what an educator wants to learn, or in some cases, another option for older students considering majors in data science or related fields. Taking these courses can also be used as a model for younger students.

Get started

With DS4E, there are ready-to-use presentations that can be used to show the importance of data science and why it needs to be added to the K through 12 curriculum in our schools. There is also an advocacy pack available for educators to share with their school administrators.

It can be uncomfortable for teachers who feel like they don’t have the expertise needed to teach a concept, however there are enough resources available that make it easier for educators to get started.

Service Ideas For Career Exploration

Preparation for college, university, and future careers starts early. High school students start thinking about what careers they might want to pursue in the future as early as their freshman year.

School courses can help students identify areas of interest or uncover specific talents. Other students find working part-time jobs gives them an idea of what they’re good at and extracurriculars or school clubs also allow students the opportunity to explore their passions. Additionally, students find that volunteering exposes them to careers or areas of work they might not have otherwise considered.

Over the years, districts have continued to see the importance and impact of civic engagement on students. Community-engaged students have improved student outcomes for many reasons: students develop important skills through volunteering, have leadership opportunities, experience a sense of belonging, and grow socially and emotionally as they serve others. Students also learn vital skills that allow them to find success in their lives after high school.

Educators work hard to ensure students receive a proper academic education but also are pivotal in spurring students on as they grow individually. As your students are exploring potential career paths and determining what they want to pursue after high school, encourage them to volunteer. As students are thinking about where to volunteer or complete their service hours, encourage students to reflect on what their areas of interest are. This is so personal to each student but it allows them to identify potential areas of focus or interests that could lead to a career path. From there, work with the student to identify opportunities or encourage the student to research needs in the community that would give them some real hands-on experience. Volunteering allows students to help others, see the impact of their work, and explore career interests.

Here are volunteer opportunities and service ideas for students to explore various career paths:

  • Social Services Agencies: Offering time at agencies supporting the homeless, elderly, or individuals with disabilities, allows students to explore careers in social work, counseling, or healthcare.
  • Political Campaigns: Students can assist in local political campaigns to learn more about the process. This is helpful for students interested in politics or public policy.
  • Art and Music Programs: Students interested in fine arts, art history, or music can volunteer at local art galleries or community music programs to gain insight into the arts and culture sector.
  • Community Events and Festivals: Volunteering to help organize or run community events is a great experience for students interested in hospitality or event planning.
  • Tutoring/Mentoring: Students with an interest in teaching can start by tutoring or mentoring other students to get a feel for a career in education.
  • Animal Shelter or Zoo: Students interested in veterinary careers or even zoology can gain experience and insight into the industry.
  • Technology or Marketing: Students interested in technology can volunteer to teach coding or basic tech-related lessons at community centers or nursing homes. Students interested in social media or marketing can put those skills to use volunteering to manage social media for local organizations.
  • Environmental Conservation Projects/ Community Gardens: Students can participate in a community garden or an environmental conversation project to learn about agriculture, sustainable practices, environmental sciences, or urban planning.
  • Library or Museums: Students can volunteer at a library or museum to gain insights into the world of archiving, curation, and education which can be useful for students interested in the arts, history, or information science.
  • Sports or Recreation Programs: Volunteer with youth sports teams or recreational programs. This can help students explore careers in coaching or sports management.

Outcomes of Service

In today’s ever-changing job market, we need to help students develop a variety of skills that will enable them to be flexible with the changes we are seeing in the world of work. It is also important that students have opportunities to consider a variety of career paths. It’s not enough to just focus on the careers and options that exist today, as technology and the jobs in demand are constantly evolving. To help students take ownership of their career journey and be curious about opportunities available, educators can explore the resources provided by Defined Learning to help students learn about their options.

Defined Learning offers a variety of tools and resources to help K through 12 students explore career options and develop the skills needed to succeed in the future, whether in college or career. There are materials available for students in elementary, middle, and high school and each has a listing of possible career choices and

Here are some ideas to get students excited about creating their own career paths:

  • Encourage Career Exploration

One of the best ways to get students excited about creating their own career paths is to encourage them to explore their interests and passions. Ask students about their interests and provide opportunities for students to exchange ideas with classmates. Sparking interest in career exploration happens when students have a chance to dive into their own curiosity and tap into their personal interests. When students are passionate about something, they are more likely to be motivated and engaged in their work. Sharing resources will provide students with access to a wide range of real-world career scenarios that can help them identify their interests and passions.
